A large inland sea
covered Southern Nevada and the
Las Vegas Valley for millions of years. When this sea
receded, it revealed fire-colored oxidized minerals in
gray
limestone with blood-red sandstone.
About 65 million years ago, a huge
fault thrust in which
two crustal plates collided shoved one plate over the
other. The result was the rugged outcroppings of red
sandstone and gray limestone throughout Las Vegas and
the Las Vegas Valley.
