In the late 1970's, Las Vegas school districts
originated magnet schools as a means of desegregating school
systems and promoting diversity. Although they were intended
to provide incentives for parents to remain in the public school
system, children were placed in racially isolated schools or
neighborhoods to encourage a variety of races to enroll in the
schools.
Las Vegas magnet schools offer special curricula such as performing
arts and math and science programs. Quotas were designed to
enroll white and minority students outside of their local neighborhoods
and were allowed to promote desegregation without making it
a mandate.
The goal of Las Vegas magnet schools was to create higher achievement
levels and to establish an overall improvement in the quality
of education. As a result, innovative curricula and instructional
approaches strengthened the educational program in order to
prepare students for careers and furthering their education.
Besides the excellent public school system, the following private
schools provide a wealth of educational opportunities to our
expanding youth population in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is contained
within the tenth largest school district in the United States.
Also, Las Vegas public schools number more than 200.
